Moo-Tels, Goat Kids and Marinated Cheese at Edgwick Farm

Milking time! Edgwick Farm's goats line up for their evening milking.
Over the past few months we’ve been so busy planning our own adventure that we haven’t had the time to sneak away for any farm visits. Fortunately, last Saturday we had the opportunity to visit Dan and Talitha at Edgwick Farm about an hour north of NYC. Dan and Talitha worked through the farm start-up process for the past five years and are now producing some fantastic goat’s milk cheeses out of a beautiful new micro-creamery. We were lucky enough to join them for a full day of milking, feeding and cheesemaking.

Leaving THE City

View of St. Patrick's Cathedral and Rock Center on my walk to work

As I thought about the move I realized that we’re not just leaving any city, we’re leaving THE city. If you’ve ever been to NYC you’ve probably heard it referred to as “the city”. When I first moved here I couldn’t comprehend how ridiculous (and egotistical) that sounded. The city, as if NYC was the only city in the world. Well, after nearly 7 years in the city I can attest that it is a city like none other. We're going to miss a lot of the great stuff that New York has to offer. Food, music, museums, local bars and hangouts, concrete and honking. Not so much those last two, but you get the drift.

The thing we'll miss the most, however, is our friends. Over the years we watched a seemingly endless stream of friends come and go. If ever there’s a transient place, it’s NYC. As friends moved on I wondered what it would be like when we finally left the city. It's the only place I've lived and worked since college. Perhaps fortunately, it was clear from day one that I would not live in the city forever and I honestly never thought it would be too difficult to leave. Over the past 2-3 weeks though I started to understand just how much I may have underestimated the attachment. It's not easy to uproot your entire life for the past seven years and move it far, far away.

2011 - Remembering an Epic Year

If there's one thing I'll definitely remember about 2011 it's the over-use of the word "epic". It drives me crazy.

Ok, that's not completely true, 2011 was full of many wonderful memories and significant events. So much so that I want to recap some of it.

Winter

This time a year ago we were stranded in D.C. due to Snowpocalypse 2010 (Click for Photos). I was just finishing the book “The One Straw Revolution” and Sweetbreads was knitting me an alpaca wool cap (which she has since commandeered). Luckily, we have family in D.C. and were graciously hosted by Sweetbreads' Aunt and Uncle, along with their boisterous chocolate lab. At the time we were starting to formulate our plans for the future and over the course of 2011 it would all start to come together.
