Saving our First Seeds - Lavender

I’ve always found seed saving to be a very romantic idea. One invoking dusty jars half way full of satiny seeds of different shades and sizes - maybe even of a grandmother passing one of those jars to her grand daughter as she departs for life in a distant country... sigh! The beauty behind the sustainability, resourcefulness, and independence in seed saving is just as compelling to me. There are many reasons why you might want to start seed saving. Saving seeds encourages the continuation of ecological diversification by keeping heritage and rare breeds from being wiped out. Saving and replanting seed is to engage in the cycle of life and the idea that doing so can now be seen as a controversial activity is more than just a little unnerving. It’s a very interesting topic worth learning about and I’d like to share a video from one of my favorite seed saving champions, Vandana Shiva with you for a good intro...

Vermont Cheesemakers Festival

Shelburne Farm, Vermont Cheesemakers Festival, Little Seed Farm, GrassfedVolunteer Sign In at the Shelburne Farms Coach Barn
What a weekend! After a great Saturday traipsing around Hawthorne Valley Farm, Scrapple and I took a trip up to my home state for the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival. Cheese fest? In Vermont? We didn't need any more convincing. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect, but we happily signed up as volunteers to help with vendor set-up. Volunteering was a great way to save $35 each on a ticket and get a chance to meet the cheesemakers. After set-up we were free to spend an amazing day indulging in VT artisan cheese, beer, chocolate, and conversation. We're sure to be first in line to volunteer again next year!

We arrived at Shelburne Farms at 8am for our Vendor Set-up shift and were stunned by the beauty and sheer massiveness of the farm (approx. 400 acres bordering Lake Champlain). I had been once or twice to their working museum when I was in elementary school and have fond memories of churning butter but somehow not a one of the amazingly stunning architecture or the idyllic location on Lake Champlain. The sun was shining, a soft breeze was blowing, and the cheese was rolling in! And ooh the cheese!

Make Your Own Hand-Pressed Wedding Invites and Keep The Piggybank Happy

the first step of our invites Scrapple and I are getting married in August (yeay!) and for the past few months I’ve been immersed in planning and crafting. I'm trying to save cash for the farm and make our big day more sustainable while giving it an aesthetic that has our own special feel. Making our invites turned out to be a great example. I thought I'd share how I did it as the research part took some time and I uncovered a few gems during the process. It was a fun project and I loved how they turned out - they feel like us!
